West out of London via Stonehenge, standing in its fields as it has for 5,000 years, to the finest Georgian city in Britain. Bath is Roman baths and sweeping crescents, independent shops and afternoon tea taken seriously, all of it walkable and much of it unchanged since Jane Austen complained about the crowds. And it sits on the edge of the Cotswolds, so a day among the villages comes with it: Castle Combe, Bibury and Broadway, rolling hills and rose-draped cottages, with a proper pub lunch in the middle.

Cornwall opens with its oldest stories and its best lunches. King Arthur's Tintagel stands in ruins on its Atlantic headland, Boscastle's smugglers' harbour hides between towering cliffs, and at Bedruthan the giant's stepping stones march across the sand far below the clifftop path. The journey ends where England does. St Michael's Mount rises from its bay on a tidal causeway, Mousehole curls granite arms around a tiny harbour, and on the tin coast at Botallack the engine houses stand on the cliff edge above shafts that ran out under the sea. Land's End and the Minack Theatre crown the final headlands, and the little branch line train carries you into St Ives for a last day among the galleries of Cornwall's most celebrated town.
